About us

Our Mission

The Barrie Concert Association’s mission is to inspire and enrich the community through the transformative power of classical music. Through our diverse offerings, we aim to foster a deep appreciation for classical music, engage audiences of all ages, and support the artistic development of musicians.

Since its founding in 1946 by Bruce Owen, the BCA has grown into the largest concert presenter in the region. As a charitable organization, the BCA organizes a series of concerts each season, showcasing a diverse range of genres, from classical to jazz and contemporary music.

John French

Artistic Director

Born and raised in Midland, John French began his musical journey at the age of five with piano lessons that sparked a lifelong passion for the arts. That early foundation led him to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, an ARCT in Piano Performance, and to pursue further studies in Salzburg, Austria.

John continued to deepen his musical expertise with a Master’s Degree in Musicology from the University of Toronto, followed by postgraduate studies in 19th-century vocal music. Recognizing the importance of strong leadership in the arts, he later completed a Master of Business Administration in Arts Administration at York University.

Throughout a successful career in business, John has remained devoted to music. He has performed widely as an accompanist and recitalist, taught piano and theory, directed choirs, founded multiple music initiatives, and contributed generously to cultural and charitable events. In 2010, he established the Brookside Music Association, where he continues to serve as Executive and Artistic Director.

John’s contributions have been recognized with numerous honours, including the Excellence in Culture Award from Culture Midland, the Inspirational People Award from the Culture Alliance in the Heart of Georgian Bay, and a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International. He is also a recent recipient of the Qennefer Browne Award, celebrating a lifetime of dedication to arts and culture in North Simcoe.

Bruce Owen

Founder

Bruce Owen (1931 – 2022) was the founder of the Barrie Concert Association and its guiding light for about 40 years. His passion for classical and related music and his connections with a large number of musicians enabled him and the Association to present world caliber performances right here in Barrie, year after year. Bruce had a particular interest in involving young people in classical music, both as performers and audience members.
